Te Kotuku Maternity Redevelopment

The Te Kotuku extension project added a state-of-the-art medical laboratory, neonatal unit, and paediatric units to the existing maternity building at Whangārei Hospital.

The works were planned and staged in such a way to enable continued use of the existing maternity unit and to minimise disruption. There was a high focus and importance on operational continuity, health and safety of staff, patients, whānau and ambulances during construction.

The project completed the fit out and expansion that was originally allowed for when the new maternity building was designed and built (2012-2015). The existing shell space at level two was completed and a new level constructed above (level three).

The expansion includes a new vertical circulation core at the east end of the building to provide public access to the upper levels, and connection with the existing hospital from Hospital Road. There is an additional lift and stair core at the western end of the building to provide staff and logistics access to the upper levels as well as stair egress for emergency situations.

The extension was officially opened by Health Minister Dr Shane Reti in April 2024.

The Te Kotuku team expertly handled a complex and sensitive project with integrity and professionalism. Despite challenges working above an operational neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) ward, their problem-solving kept the project on budget and minimised disruptions. Clinicians impacted by the project remarked they had never worked with such a collaborative team, nor one that listened to their individual needs so well. By fostering trust, sharing responsibility, and adopting a “slow down to speed up” strategy, the team set a high standard for excellence demonstrating how effective teamwork can achieve outstanding results.
